SUGGESTED ITINERARY
This trip will cover the most spectacular sights in South of Iceland and be very interesting without the need to drive too much. You will see Iceland more like an Icelander than a tourist. The trip is based on a rental car, with pick up and drop off from Keflavik International Airport.
Day 1
Arrive at Keflavik airport.
Pick up the rental car at the Airport.
Drive to Reykjavik. On the way stop by the Blue Lagoon. Continue by Grindavik and Krisuvik to Reykjavik. On your way you will see magnificent craters, mud and black lava.
Drive to Reykjavik and check into accommodation in Reykjavik City centre. Accommodation is in a double/twin room in Reykjavik, B&B or apartment. Depending on the time of your arrival you may have time for an excursion.
Day 2
Reykjavik is an exciting modern city with lots to see and do or if you want to relax visit one of the many spas and swimming pools.
Day 3
Drive to Hellisheidi. There is a new power station that you can visit; it is free for entry and very interesting. Continue to Kerid; an extinct crater. From there continue to Geysir and then visit Geysisstofa. There is an interesting multimedia show, where you can experience earthquakes and learn everything about volcanoes and volcanic activity.
Drive through a landscape formed by glaciers and the many eruptions from Hekla; an active volcano, which you will drive past.
Overnight stay in a farm holiday cottage, at the root of the Eyjafjallajokull Glacier. You might visit the Eyjafjallajokull Visitor Centre.
Day 4
Drive to Landeyjarhofn (about half an hour drive) and take the ferry to Vestmannaeyjar (takes about 40 minutes). In Vestmannaeyjar there was an eruption in 1973, where half of the houses went under lava. Spend the night in Vestmannaeyjar.
Day 5
Take the ferry back to Landeyjarhofn. Visit Kirkjubaejarklaustur, Vik and Dyrholaey on your way. Continue to Jokulsarlon. There you will see icebergs that form the lagoon. You can take an optional boat trip and sail between the icebergs. Spend the night in the area.
Day 6
Drive to Thingvellir where the oldest parliament in the world was located. Drive from there to Nesjavellir, where an immensely powerful geothermal station is operated and it is fantastic to see the strokes from hot water coming from the ground high in the air. On the way you can see great waterfalls, Skogarfoss, Seljalandsfoss. You can even take a swim in a natural pool Seljavallalaug.
Drive to Reykjavik and spend the night in the capital. Take a swim in one of the great outdoor swimming pools.
Day 7
Drive back to Keflavik. You can use the morning by sightseeing around Reykjavik, take a swim in one of the outdoor pools or take a whale-watching tour.
