THINGS TO DO IN REYKJAVIK
Reykjavik is a modern, vibrant capital city surrounded by stunning scenery.
Reykjavik can be at its prettiest during the winter months. As the streets and buildings are illuminated for Christmas the city takes on the intimacy of the fishing and market village from which it grew. Laugardalur (Hot Springs Valley) is a popular destination for families with its sporting facilities and ice rink or try skiing in Blafjoll or Skalafell. Built on geo-thermal springs, Reykjavik has many warm swimming pools with lots for children to do and outdoors ‘hot-pots’ to relax in.
There is a lot to see in Reykjavik which is within easy walking distance of the centre. Grjotaþorp (Rock village) and Adalstraeti (Main Street) retain many 18th century buildings and the Settlement exhibition, which contains the remains of a Viking long house and archaeological remains of early Viking settlement.
More modern sights include Hallgrimskirkja (the church of Hallgrimur) and Perlan (the Pearl), which contains the Saga Museum, both built on basalt hills with great views over the whole city.
The National and Maritime museums and the National Art Gallery are just a few of the cultural highlights of the City and some of the venues for a constant flow of cultural events.
Reykjavik offers great shopping, whether for designer brands or new innovative Icelandic design. Most shops are found in the famous 101 district in the City centre and around the old harbour.
These are also the best locations for eating out. Icelandic cuisine makes the best of local produce, especially seafood and wild game, cooked in traditional style or incorporating modern styles from around the world.
Reykjavik has a vibrant nightlife. Whether you are looking for live music or dancing there are many bars and clubs which are open until the early hours.
